The Snail man is back!
Somewhere, sort of in the middle of Europe - in the middle of Belgium - in the middle of a little neighbourhood - there is a sort of rather normal looking house... well, with the exception of this giant stone sitting right in front of it...with this giant snail on top of it.....oh, and this little strange face looking up at you from one of the stones of the stairs leading to the entrance....you suddenly stumble, just a little....
Besides that, it looks and appears rather normal -
Well, there is also a face appearing from one of the bushes, but...you pass it rather easily -
and then ....
And then, if you are lucky, you will learn that this is the furthest from a 'normal house' you can get...
Because - below this normal-looking house there is a whole other world!
This is the World of 'The Slow Ones'....
Now - There is someone else who (also) inhabits this world;
He is the Guardian and the Creator of 'The Slow Ones'.
And this someone hasn't let anyone, not even his dear wife, enter for many, many years!
The Slow Ones don't really know what to make of this Guardian/Creator -
because HE is the furthest from Slow you can get.....
Like a whirlwind he comes and goes!
But his wife knows...
And so - she tells him new stories...
And the Slow Ones listen....

slak?
Wie
haalt het in zijn hoofd om een heel oeuvre op te bouwen rond een
slak. Dat slijmerige vieze beest dat wij liefst uit onze tuinen en
bloemperken bannen.
Maar
misschien is het juist dat; wat de kunstenaar Roland Menten in haar
zo boeit. Dat ze niet geliefd is. Dat ze zwak is en vervolgd wordt.
En dat ze zich daar niets van aan trekt, dat ze zich niet laat
opjagen en zich bij bedreigingen terug trekt. En haar deur sluit.
Niet wil meedoen aan de stress en de haastigheid Zich opsluit in
wijsheid?
Geeft
Roland Menten daarom de slak een ereplaats? Wellicht wel! Maar er is
veel meer dan dat. In die bescheidenheid vindt Roland Menten de
grootsheid van haar bestaan. Van,, ons”bestaan! Een hele reeks
levenswijsheden spiegelt hij ons voor.
Relativeringsvermogen,
de zin van de omgekeerde wereld, de dwaasheid van de haast, het
gelukzalige van de traagheid. Zó houdt de kunstenaar Menten ons een
spiegel voor, waarin wij onszelf gadeslaan in onze dwaze
alledaagsheid.
Hij
choqueert nooit, in tegendeel. Hij gebruikt de kracht van de
glimlach. Hij suggereert heel subtiel. Hij beeldt niet domweg uit,
hij vermomt het listig en varieert op tientallen wijzen.
Dat
maakt hem tot een ,,grote meneer” in de hedendaagse kunst.
Bij
de werken van Roland Menten geven de titels een meerwaarde. Zijn
werken zijn het leven zelf."
